The U.S. Secret Service is investigating reports of gunfire overnight near Lafayette Square, directly across from the White House. No injuries were reported, and a search of the park and surrounding area after midnight turned up no suspects.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

President Donald Trump was at the White House at the time. Officials said operations continued without interruption, though security in the area was heightened. The park has been closed in recent weeks for renovation work.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The Secret Service is coordinating the investigation with the Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia and the U.S. Park Police.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the United States and Iran agreed Tuesday evening to a two-week cease-fire as President Trump\u2019s 8 p.m. EDT deadline approached for potential escalation against Iranian power infrastructure.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Vice President JD Vance, speaking in Hungary alongside Prime Minister Viktor Orban, addressed the looming deadline earlier Tuesday.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe feel confident that we can get a response, whether it\u2019s positive or negative, we\u2019re gonna get a response from the Iranians by 8 o\u2019clock tonight,\u201d Vance said. \u201cI hope they make the right response because what we really want is we want a world where oil and gas is flowing freely, where people can afford to heat their homes and cool their homes, where people can afford to transport themselves to work.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s not gonna happen if the Iranians are engaged in acts of economic terrorism. They\u2019ve got to know, we\u2019ve got tools in our toolkit that we so far haven\u2019t decided to use. The president of the United States can decide to use them, and he will decide to use them if the Iranians don\u2019t change their course of conduct.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

One week earlier, Trump said Iran had agreed to allow additional oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, calling it a \u201ctribute\u201d to the United States amid ongoing negotiations.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said Iran expanded an earlier concession of 10 tankers to include 20 more vessels.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cThey gave us\u2026 20 boats of oil. Big, big boats going through the Hormuz Strait,\u201d Trump said. \u201cThat\u2019s taking place starting tomorrow morning.\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

The move builds on what Trump previously described as an initial \u201cgift\u201d earlier in the week. Before the conflict began in late February, the Strait of Hormuz handled roughly one-third of global oil exports. Traffic has since dropped by as much as 90 percent, fueling volatility in energy markets.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Iranian officials have downplayed the tanker allowances, describing them as routine regional trade rather than concessions to U.S. demands.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Trump warned Saturday that Iran faced \u201cdire consequences\u201d if it did not reopen the strait or agree to a ceasefire within 48 hours. \u201cTime is running out \u2014 48 hours before all Hell will reign down on them,\u201d he posted on Truth Social. A later post simply stated, \u201cTuesday, 8 P.M. Eastern Time!\u201d<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n
