A sweeping effort to root out fraud across the federal government is producing, the Trump administration says, staggering results.<\/p>\n
Officials say billions of taxpayer dollars have already been protected, but they insist the investigation is far from over.<\/p>\n
Vice President JD Vance said Friday that the Trump administration\u2019s Task Force to Eliminate Fraud has identified approximately $230 billion in alleged fraud against the federal government and has prevented roughly $56 billion in fraudulent payments from being issued.<\/p>\n
The latest update came during a high-profile gathering of senior administration officials, where new figures were released, and additional enforcement actions were announced.<\/p>\n
The administration argues the effort is exposing long-running problems that had gone unchecked for years.<\/p>\n
Vance provided the update during the administration\u2019s first televised Cabinet meeting from Camp David, where he briefed President Donald Trump and fellow Cabinet members on the progress of the task force, which he chairs.<\/p>\n
The task force was established to coordinate anti-fraud efforts across multiple federal agencies as part of what the administration describes as a government-wide strategy to identify waste, fraud and abuse in taxpayer-funded programs.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust since the beginning of the fraud task force that I started under the president\u2019s leadership and direction, we have identified $230 billion dollars of fraud that\u2019s being perpetrated against the American people, and we have halted already $56 billion dollars of that,\u201d Vance said.<\/p>\n
He acknowledged that recovering taxpayer money after it has already been distributed can be difficult but argued that preventing fraudulent payments before they are made is the most effective way to protect public funds.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s sometimes hard once the money has already gone out the door; it\u2019s hard to get it back,\u201d Vance said. \u201cBut stopping it from going out the door is how we save the American people $56 billion. Of course, we\u2019re going to keep on working on that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vance also announced that the administration planned to unveil 17 additional anti-fraud initiatives on Friday that he said would target another estimated $300 million in fraudulent activity.<\/p>\n
\u201cJust today, Mr. President, we will announce 17 new anti-fraud actions that will total about a third of a billion dollars, and that\u2019s added to the $230 billion that we\u2019ve already uncovered,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
During his remarks, Vance argued that government fraud harms more than just taxpayers, saying it also deprives legitimate beneficiaries of programs intended to help vulnerable Americans.<\/p>\n
To illustrate that point, Vance pointed to a Medicaid-administered program designed to provide neonatal care for low-income mothers and infants.<\/p>\n
He alleged that fraudulent companies had exploited the program by billing for services that were never provided, enriching themselves while reducing resources available for families who genuinely needed assistance.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo who loses in that equation?\u201d Vance asked. \u201cNumber one, of course, is the American taxpayer that is $230 billion poorer because of the fraud that this country has let go on.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBut I actually think most importantly is that we\u2019ve seen that program run out of money,\u201d he continued. \u201cSo we\u2019ve seen moms and babies unable to access the healthcare that they need because the fraudsters have gotten rich. That is a disgrace.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vance argued that meaningful action to combat the problem only began after President Trump directed his administration to prioritize fraud investigations across federal agencies.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd until the president ordered us to stop it, no one was doing anything about it,\u201d Vance said.<\/p>\n
Following the vice president\u2019s remarks, Trump praised Vance\u2019s leadership of the task force and compared him to legendary Prohibition-era lawman Eliot Ness, who became known for leading the effort to dismantle Al Capone\u2019s criminal organization, Breitbart News\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n
The administration has not yet released a detailed public accounting of the $230 billion figure discussed during the Cabinet meeting, but officials indicated additional enforcement actions and fraud investigations are expected as the task force continues reviewing federal programs for improper payments and fraudulent claims.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
