But the deeper reason for her constant presence is simpler than any of that. One insider says the defense secretary counts on her to keep him \u201con the straight and narrow,\u201d given his long documented history of alcohol abuse.<br class=\"html-br\" \/><br class=\"html-br\" \/>This isn\u2019t a minor role. Jennifer sat in on a highly sensitive US-UK meeting about military intelligence sharing with Ukraine, so sensitive that British officials spoke only in general terms because her presence made them uneasy. They ended up holding a smaller, more detailed follow up meeting without her.<br class=\"html-br\" \/><br class=\"html-br\" \/>Former Pentagon spokesperson John Ullyot, who resigned after just three months, described being pulled into a 40 minute interview with Jennifer that turned unexpectedly hard edged. \u201cIt\u2019s bonkers that a defense secretary would involve his wife in his sensitive official duties, including sharing details of an impending military operation, and face zero consequences,\u201d he said.<br class=\"html-br\" \/><br class=\"html-br\" \/>The Pentagon\u2019s response was to call Ullyot \u201ca crazy ex\u201d rather than address the substance. Hegseth himself has credited his wife with saving his life, crediting what he calls his \u201ctwo Js,\u201d Jennifer and Jesus. That\u2019s a real and human thing to say about a marriage.
