U.S. Navy Ends Search for Missing Helicopter Squadron Commander in Arabian Sea
The U.S. Navy has concluded search and rescue operations for Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards, commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5, after his MH-60S Seahawk made an emergency landing in the Arabian Sea on July 1.
Edwards, a native of Oakland, Oregon, remains missing. The Navy terminated the extensive search on July 5 following more than 102 hours of continuous operations covering an area exceeding 14,000 square miles. Three other crew members were rescued and are in stable condition.
Ships and aircraft from two carrier strike groups, two P-8A Poseidon patrol and reconnaissance squadrons, and multiple Air Force aircraft participated in the effort, Navy officials said. Investigators have found no indication the emergency resulted from hostile action. The cause of the incident remains under review.
Edwards graduated from Norfolk State University in 2006 through the Naval ROTC program and received his aviator wings in 2008 as a helicopter pilot. He previously served with Helicopter Sea Combat Squadrons 22, 84, and 85 before assuming command of HSC-5, known as the “Nightdippers,” in July 2025. His awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. He had been selected for promotion to captain in fiscal year 2027.
“Commander Gabe Edwards was the epitome of selfless leadership, who dedicated himself to service and sacrifice for the last 20 years,” said Capt. Matthew Lewis, commander of Carrier Air Wing 7. “Our deepest gratitude and sympathy go out to his family, who should know that Gabe led his squadron, the HSC-5 ‘Nightdippers,’ with integrity and fortitude.”
Edwards is survived by his wife, Rebecca Edwards, and their two children. In a statement, Rebecca Edwards expressed gratitude to the search teams: “We are profoundly grateful to every Sailor, aviator, and Airman who devoted countless hours, extraordinary skill, and unwavering determination in the effort to bring Gabe home.”
