WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Marco Rubio has recounted an unusual episode aboard Air Force One in which he and other senior officials reportedly spent roughly 90 minutes wondering whether a sleeping passenger might actually be experiencing a medical emergency.
Rubio shared the story during an appearance on the Katie Miller Podcast, describing the incident as an uncomfortable combination of uncertainty, concern and hesitation.
According to Rubio, the officials were returning from China when they noticed an individual sleeping in a conference room. The person appeared completely unresponsive despite significant activity and noise taking place around them.
For approximately an hour and a half, those nearby debated whether they should intervene or contact a physician.
Rubio said the hesitation stemmed partly from the awkward possibility that the person was simply sleeping deeply. Waking someone unnecessarily could have created an embarrassing situation, but leaving an unresponsive person alone carried a far more serious risk.
The concern increased because, according to Rubio, the individual appeared not to respond to surrounding stimuli and had an unusual breathing pattern.
Eventually, the situation resolved without requiring emergency intervention.
“Luckily, the person was fine,” Rubio said.
Rubio did not identify the passenger, and there has been no independent confirmation of who was involved. That lack of information prompted jokes and speculation online, with some social-media users suggesting possible names. However, there is no evidence supporting those claims, and Rubio did not provide details identifying the individual.
The anecdote attracted additional attention because Rubio had previously faced questions from lawmakers about whether he had witnessed President Donald Trump falling asleep during official meetings.
During a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu questioned Rubio about the issue. Rubio said he had never personally seen Trump fall asleep and instead described the president as someone who maintains an unusually demanding schedule.
Lieu subsequently referenced video footage that he said showed Trump with his eyes closed during a meeting while Rubio was speaking.
Rubio maintained his position, saying he had not witnessed the president sleeping.
The Air Force One story, however, involved a very different situation. Rather than political controversy, Rubio described it as an unusual moment in which officials simply did not know whether they were witnessing ordinary sleep or a potentially serious medical emergency.
With the person ultimately confirmed to be fine, the incident ended without consequences.
Still, Rubio’s account offered a rare glimpse into the unusual circumstances that can unfold aboard the presidential aircraft, where even an apparently ordinary nap can leave senior officials facing an unexpectedly difficult decision.
