NEW YORK — Former President Bill Clinton has offered a reassuring update following a serious health scare that led to several days of hospitalization, thanking the doctors and nurses who treated him and telling supporters that he is recovering.
In a video message released after his discharge, Clinton said he was grateful for the widespread support he received during his hospitalization and expressed particular appreciation for the medical team at UC Irvine Medical Center in California, where he spent about a week receiving treatment.
“I’m really glad to be back home,” Clinton said in the message, adding that he was “doing great” and was on the road to recovery. He also encouraged people to pay attention to their health and seek medical care when something does not feel right.
Infection Led to Hospitalization
Clinton was hospitalized in October 2021 after experiencing fatigue while he was in Southern California for events connected to the Clinton Foundation.
An aide said doctors diagnosed him with a urological infection that spread into his bloodstream. Clinton was treated with intravenous antibiotics and fluids while doctors closely monitored his condition. His medical team reported that his health indicators were improving during treatment.
Doctors also reported that Clinton’s fever and white blood cell count had returned to normal as he responded to treatment. He was ultimately discharged from UC Irvine Medical Center and returned to his home in New York to complete his course of antibiotics.
An aide emphasized that Clinton had not developed septic shock, the most severe stage of a serious systemic infection. The clarification came as news of his hospitalization generated significant public attention because of his age and previous health history.
Gratitude for Medical Team
In his public message, Clinton repeatedly expressed appreciation for the medical professionals who cared for him.
He specifically thanked the doctors, nurses and other staff at UC Irvine Medical Center for their treatment and singled out Dr. Alpesh Amin, who oversaw his care and helped keep his family informed during the hospitalization.
The former president also thanked members of the public who sent messages of support while he was receiving treatment.
His upbeat tone offered reassurance to supporters following several days of uncertainty surrounding his condition.
A Message About Health
Clinton used the experience to encourage others to take warning signs seriously.
He urged people to listen to their bodies and take appropriate steps when they become concerned about their health. His message emphasized that maintaining good health is important not only for individuals but also for their families and communities.
The former president has experienced other significant health challenges over the years. He underwent quadruple bypass surgery in 2004 and later received coronary stents in 2010.
Despite those setbacks, Clinton remained active in public life after leaving the White House in 2001, including through speaking engagements, charitable activities and work associated with the Clinton Foundation.
Looking Ahead
Following his release from the hospital, Clinton returned home to New York and continued recovering outside the hospital while completing his prescribed treatment.
His latest message struck a notably optimistic tone, focusing less on the seriousness of the hospitalization and more on gratitude, recovery and his determination to remain active.
For supporters and members of the public who had followed reports of his hospitalization, the update provided a measure of reassurance.
After a health scare involving an infection that required hospital treatment, the former president made clear that his attention was turning toward recovery and returning to his normal activities.
For Clinton, the episode became both a personal health challenge and an opportunity to remind others of the importance of recognizing symptoms, seeking medical attention and taking care of themselves.
